Clos Lanson 2007: Courage in acid, storm and hail

October 3 2022: A vineyard in the heart of Reims, located on the rue de Courlancy, beneath it the cellars of Champagne Lanson, surrounded by houses, with a pretty view of the historic Reims Cathedral. The Chardonnay vine was already being cultivated on this lime-rich soil in the 18th century. This Clos covers only one hectare, a rare, rare wine that you have to enjoy in small sips. If you are a friend of acidic champagne.

All Clos vintages are vindicated without malolactic fermentation. This alone guarantees a nice acidity. But this 2007 vintage packs a punch: all in all, 2007 was a chaotic year in Champagne.

After a mild winter, vegetation started exceptionally early; the sun and the unusual warmth of April further accelerate the precocity of the vines. After these mild temperatures until the end of July, storms, rain and cold came in August. The ripening of the grapes slowed down or even stopped. And so this Clos Lanson 2007 has a higher acidity than the wines from around 1996 and 2008.

A razor-sharp champagne, structured, dense, unusual, white fruits, firm finish. This Clos 2007 vintage is a champagne for friends of acid, storm and hail. Vinified 100 percent in large oak barrels. The 2009 vintage is now on the market, and we will be reviewing it here shortly.
